How does the rough endoplasmic reticulum benefit the cell? What is its function and how does its structure relate to the function it is required to carry out? What types of cells are they found in?
The Rough ER is a series of flattened and connected sacs spontaneously spotted with ribosomes. The main role performed by this organelle is to export proteins and glycoproteins. The ribosomes give it the rough appearance and are bound to the endoplasmic reticulum when it begins to synthesize a protein destined for the secretory pathway. It benefits the cell because it gives it a place for the proteins to form. They are found in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
